Twisted Tales: Suddenly Super is a book all about Violet Parr from the Incredibles, a 14 year old with the ability to turn invisible. This story reimagines the events of the movie, wherein Violet starts working with Syndrome, who claims to be a friend of her parents but is not all he seems to be. Throughout the story, Violet and her brother Dash train with their powers, but Violet wants to give up her powers and just be a normal girl. After she thinks that her parents have been killed, she wants to try and keep her family safe by any means. I really enjoyed reading this, as Violet was written very well and definitely seemed like an awkward and emotional teenager, and her personal struggles seemed very realistic (except for the Super abilities!) I have really enjoyed other titles from this series, including Let it Go and Go The Distance, both by the same author as this title, and as a result, I felt confident that I would enjoy this book too, and I definitely did. I’d recommend this to anyone interested in stories of magical abilities, or any fans of the Incredibles, as this was a very enjoyable book and a great read.
I’m not gonna lie when I say I was so excited to read this Twisted Tale! When they originally announced The Incredibles 2, I went to see it the weekend of release (using my cousin as an excuse to see it 😂) so I’m defo a fan of the movies.
This twisted tale is mainly focused on Violet as she becomes an Agent of Syndrome who as we all know is the bad guy.
This is a perfect addition to the Twisted Tales series!
Perfect YR story for reading fans of fast action stories with gizmos and gadgets, and even more so for fans of Disney Pixar’s ‘The Incredibles’. All the family is here, but it is the children who take centre stage. The Villains might not know it yet, but they don’t stand a chance. Thank you to Igloo Books and NetGalley for the ARC. As a big fan of The Incredibles, this book was perfect. I loved the different character points of view throughout. Well written and a fab storyline. Perfect for anyone who loves The Incredibles films or even those who don’t!
The Disney ‘what if’ series of books has always given me joy, and this latest tale by Calonita continues to take our favourite characters to interesting places. I was over the moon to see them expand the range into characters created by Pixar. Focusing on Violet Parr as the main protagonist was an excellent choice as it taps into the conflicting emotions of her not only as a teenager but as a hero. The discovery of Jack-Jack’s powers inspired by the Pixar short was a lovely addition and made me giggle, poor Kari!
This tale may be twisted but in a super way!
What a fun action packed read! Putting a twist on the original movie, this book has me hooked from page 1. Loved it!
What if Violet became an agent of Syndrome?
The Disney Twisted Tales series has finally expanded to include Disney Pixar storylines, and who better to pen the Pixar debut than Twisted Tales legend Jen Calonita?
In her reimagining of The Incredibles, Calonita cleverly imagines what adventures the Parr children would have had if Violet and Dash didn’t sneakily follow Elastigirl to Syndrome’s island.
What if Syndrome found the children instead, aided by his girlfriend/aspiring actress Mirage? What if he distracted them with gadgets and lies whilst simultaneously manipulating Violet’s insecurities, convincing her to undertake his villainous plans?
Calonita and her amazing writing send Violet, as the main protagonist of the book, on a rollercoaster ride of self-discovery. Violet’s characterisation as an awkward teenager jumps off the page and the teen angst is perfection.
Violet just wants to be a normal girl and Syndrome takes complete advantage of this: Violet doesn’t know who she can trust and doesn’t have any confidence in herself, she is vulnerable, grieving and feels utterly alone. However, with the help of some good friends and by trusting her own judgement, Violet embarks on a mission to uncover the truth behind “Mr Incredible’s biggest fan”.
Amazingly, whilst expertly exploring this fairly huge twist in Violet’s story, the book still manages to stay true to the movie with the inclusion of our favourite characters such as Frozone, Kari the babysitter and, of course, the chaotic discovery of Jack Jacks powers.
Packed full of emotion, mystery, gadgets, villains and num-nums, Suddenly Super is a brilliant, easy read, perfect for fans of The Incredibles.
