"Frieze. What a curious title for an art fair in a red hot art market" This quote for me epitomises James Croaks thoughtful reviews which make up the first sectiion of "Backseat Driver"
I enjoy art, I enjoy books about art, what I don't enjoy is the snobbery, exclusion and pretentiousness that surrounds a lot of art and this is why I like Croak, he just says it as he sees it, a genius masquerading as a layman. This creates an engaging, immersive and welcoming environment to review with him, not watch him review. There is a quiet humour to a lot of his commentary which encourages me to keep reading, to learn more from this unique and insightful artist
"Museums show old things arranged into a coherent narrative, but a problem arises when they show old things and market them as new things" - absolutely brilliant and so on point
Considerations; Considerations, insight, reflections, A favourite quote from this section made me chuckle;
"With the quest for universal validity suspended, there is a proounced freedom to assemble lives filled with meaning from what is at hand, One just needs a bricoleur" - this is so on point in respect of 21st century soceity that I wonder if croak was also able to predict the future amongst his extensive litany of abilities
The beauty of backseat driver, is that we get an insight into the mind of the artist and subsequently a greater understanding of the thought processes behind his sculptures and photography. Absolutely a must-read
