Description

A fully illustrated biography of Max Verstappen, from karting in the junior races at age 10 to his third time winning the world championship at the end of 2023.

Max’s journey to Formula 1 stardom was not a typical one. His parents are both motorsport talents. He was born in Belgium to mum Sophie Kumpen, a champion karter, while dad Jos Verstappen was Benetton team-mate to Michael Schumacher and survived perhaps the scariest F1 pitlane incident when his car caught fire during a refuelling stop.

As well as being good team-mates, his dad and Michael Schumacher became great friends over the years. Max grew up going on family holidays with Schumacher and his son, fellow F1 star Mick.

Max broke all the records for youngest driver after he made his official debut in 2015, including youngest ever driver to win an F1 race after he transferred from Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso to Red Bull in 2016.

However, his move was at the expense of Daniil Kvyat who was demoted to Toro Rosso in his place. Verstappen then started dating Kvyat’s girlfriend, Kelly Piquet, and is now stepfather to Kvyat’s son. Complicated to say the least!

Max’s career has barely spanned a decade and he’s already gained the title of the most popular Formula One driver. With incredible skills on the track and a legion of travelling Dutch fans, he’s a force to be reckoned with and the one to watch in racing.

This fully illustrated biography explores his youth karting through to the end of the 2023 season, interspersed with 10 key races, including:

  • His debut F1 race for Toro Rosso
  • His wholly unexpected win on debut for the Red Bull team in 2016, the Spanish Grand Prix where Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg took themselves out on the opening lap
  • The 2021 British Grand Prix at Silverstone where he survived a 56G deceleration as he hit the barriers at Copse corner
  • His titanic showdown in Abu Dhabi where he won his first controversial world championship
  • His second world championship win in 2022
  • His latest win and third world championship in 2023

This detailed biography with high-quality photographs is the perfect gift for any fan of the rising F1 star Max Verstappen. It’s a standout collector’s item full of impactful info about a racing maverick. Relive Max’s formative moments, racing success and explore what the future holds for this young talent. Though things are going well right now, the volatility that led him to a physical altercation with Esteban Ocon in the 2020 Brazilian Grand Prix still appears from time to time when things don’t go his way. And soon Red Bull want a team-mate who can really push him…

Me and my family are huge Formula 1 racing fans and particularly of Max Verstappen. Verstappen has worked and trained his ass of his whole life and deserves the respect and noteriartey. Max Verstappen is genuine, a class act and a great role model for the F1 industry, and a terrific athelete. I really loved the in-depth look into his career and learning more about the specifics of the horrible crash he was in (my mom cried for weeks when she heard about) and his grueling recovery.

I read this on my large screen kindle and the accompanying photos were great! This is a must read book for any F1 racing fan and especially any Max Verstappen fan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We are definitely getting a copy of this at publishing. My mom would love this for a birthday gift.

Thanks to Netgalley, Ewan McKenzie and Quarto Publishing Group Ivy Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Here we have a perfect gift for a person who loves F1 and especially if the person is a big fan of the talented racer Max Verstappen.

We get to follow his career from the start, only 10 yo, and until the end of last year when he won his third world champion with both text and photos.

This is not only a perfect gift for a person who loves F1 and this amazing racer it is also a great coffee table book for readers out there that is a fan of his.

I don't know so much about F1 but I knew about this racer since my younger brother loves F1 and I did enjoyed the read. Now I know what I will get my brother for his birthday, it is this book.

As soon as I saw the title 'Max Verstappen' I was hooked.
Along with my stepdad, I am a massive F1 nerd, I love to read anything about the sport and drivers. This was a great insight into the world of 'Mad Max' Verstappen! from his early childhood days through his teenage years and to his third world champion title, with backstory of his parents. I will be definitely be buying a copy when it comes out, and will proudly display it on either my coffee table or my bookcase (Publication date: 16 Apr 2024). May just also have to buy a copy for my stepdad as a late birthday gift.
My F1 discord group will love this, as there are some very hardcore max fans.

"As Max crossed the line and fireworks exploded across the Emirates' sky, the final staggering figures could be etches onto stone for a season that is unlikely to be repeated and records that may never be surpassed."

Thank you Netgalley and @quartobooksus for this ARC! I LOVE F1 and this book made me so happy.

Listen. I'm a Ferrari girly (rip Charles and Carlos, sad sad sad) but I appreciate Max as the king of F1 that he is. He is a MONSTER in the races and I genuinely don't know if anyone will be able to beat him anytime soon. Regardless of who you're a fan of, you can't deny his skill and talent.

I would absolutely KILL for a physical copy of this book. You guys don't understand. The baby pictures? The in-race shots? The behind-the-scenes stills in the paddock? Phenomenal. It helps the book just fly by and makes it such an enjoyable experience. It's also insane how McKenzie is able to visually show just how incredible Max Verstappen is. The colorful graphs really hammer home Max's incredible skills and the way he just tears away from the competition.

Despite the beautiful layout of this book, it was really sad to read about Max and Jos' father-son relationship. In some ways, it makes you wonder if Jos' abusive parenting is the reason why Max is so good. Also not Jos saying, "I never abused him," as if everything being described wasn't child abuse... just interesting to me. But again, maybe this is why Max is so good...?

I really liked this book. I really just started to get into Formula One in the middle of the 2023 season because of F1 edits on TikTok so when I saw that there was a book about Max, I was so happy.
I don't really know how to rate it because I don't review biographies a whole lot, but this one was a nice easy read before the 2024 F1 season started.
The pictures are really pretty. They help us understand how young was Max when he achieved some of the best records in F1. The writing was good and made it easier to understand the F1 terms that are sometimes hard to understand as a non english speaker.
I already love Max but this book helped me understand his upcoming!

I want to thank NetGalley, Ivy Press and Ewan Mckenzie for this opportunity!
