Description
A young Shoshone woman. A small baby. A gigantic dog. A journey like no other.
In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition across the western United States to the Pacific Ocean. To communicate with the Native peoples they would encounter, they engaged a young Shoshone woman called Sacagawea to accompany them. Sacagawea’s knowledge of the West allowed them to trade for food and supplies and request help when desperately needed.
In Sacagawea: Westward with Lewis and Clark, Alana White explores the life and times of this fascinating woman. In their journals, Lewis and Clark describe Sacagawea as calm, courageous, and uncomplaining. Down raging rivers, around turbulent waterfalls, and over the Rocky Mountains, during desperate times when there was little to no food or shelter, Sacagawea endured.

A short novel about the life of Sacagawea, who joined the Lewis & Clark expedition along with her French husband in 1805. Sacagawea proved to be an invaluable aid to the Corps of Discovery & this book covers the scant details of her life.
Thank you to NetGalley, Atmosphere Press & the author for a copy of this book.
Sacagawea, a Shoshone Woman, was an integral part of the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800's. This book describes her role during the journey as well as what might have become of her afterwords.
I found this to be a very informative book about the Lewis and Clark expedition as a whole. It reads like introductory material and would be perfect for a middle or high schooler just learning about this time in history or an adult, like me, who needs a refresher. Although the book is entitled Sacagawea, it really tells much more of the story than just her part. The focus is broad strokes and gives lots of information along with andecdotes about the entire expedition. It's written in an easy-to-understand format that is accessible to a variety of ages and is fast-paced enough to hold the attention of most readers.
Bottom line: If you enjoy history, or if you are curous about this time period, this is a great introduction to Lewis and Clark and, of course, Sacagawea herself. Read this book to learn more about a fascinating woman and an interesting journey of discovery.
Sacagawea by Alana White is about the indigenous woman's role in Lewis and Clark's famed expedition to explore the northwestern United States. The book uses Lewis and Clark's journals and Native oral history as sources. It does a nice job covering Sacagawea's vital role while debunking some of the untrue stories about the expedition. It is a quick read and perfect for a middle school or high school student interested in history. Thank you to Alana White, NetGalley and Atmosphere Press for the ARC. #Sacagawea #NetGalley.
The author did well in explaining the role of Sacagawea in the exploration of the West. Sacagawea played an important role and helped Lewis and Clark. This book was very interesting, and I would recommend this to any history buff.
A concise retelling of Sacagawea's life, It is not my normal genre but it was informational and historical if that is what you are looking for.
This was a good book about a person not too many people know much about. I enjoyed and learned a lot form it.
This historical character is brought to life in a new light by Alana White. What a beautiful portrait of her life and times. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Sacagawea and her life. This was a wonderful tribute to Sacagawea and the woman she was. It is always interesting to learn more about historical individuals more in-depth. An easy-to-read tribute to Sacagawea!
I so appreciate how Alana White brought Sacagawea from the page to life with flesh and history. A wonderful read!
The story of the courageous Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who played a crucial role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, is widely known. In her book, "Sacagawea," Alana J. White takes readers on a compelling journey into uncharted territory, exploring the relationships between the expedition members and the Indigenous communities in the region. White's book delves into the indigenous woman's pivotal involvement in Lewis and Clark's renowned exploration of the northwestern United States, drawing from the explorers' journals and the Indigenous oral history. The book effectively highlights Sacagawea's significant contributions while dispelling some of the misleading information surrounding the expedition.
Sacagawea was a person whose story is often a mix of fact and fiction. Alana White does a fantastic job of wading through the myth and legend and getting to the truth in her story. Because of the way she handled the myriad stories about Sacagawea, anybody can pick up this book easily without any prior knowledge about her or the time period. I enjoyed the author's storytelling abilities as she broke down the Lewis and Clark expedition leg-by-leg. The maps were great tools in the book as well, adding a much needed visual to understand the scope of the journey they undertook. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author in the future.

This is the first time I've heard the story of Sacagawea, and I loved learning what there is to know with the scant amount of information available. Well researched, and nice context for these historical events - easily readable, so accessible for the young people I work with.
