Description

Find out the real story about the bugs all around us. Creepy crawlies do so much for us! They make honey, eat waste, help make chocolate and more.

And in this wacky book, these helpful critters are taking you on a grand tour of their homes! They just can’t wait to tell you about all the good they do. They’ll show you the special skills and features they have, explain why they’re so important to the ecosystem, and generally make their case for why they deserve a little more credit.

You’ll meet:

  • the flesh-eating beetles who may sound creepy but are just misunderstood. In fact, they help museum staff clean up old specimens, and out in the wild, they make sure the world’s forest floors aren’t littered with dead creatures, saving us from very gruesome woodland walks
  • the midges who are one of the only bugs able to pollinate cacao plants, and without whom there would be no chocolate!
  • the wax moth caterpillars—one of the first species known to be able to safely digest plastic, who could hold the key to reducing this tough-to-break-down material

And many, many more!

Without insects like the ones in this book, we wouldn't be here, but they are disappearing fast. This book introduces young readers to a loveable bunch of bugs, encouraging a new generation of mini-beast protectors. Support your child’s learning and gently introduce them to environmental issues with this colorful and fun book that’s packed with fascinating facts.

As an avid reader and a parent, I was delighted to receive an advance copy of Respect the Insect. This captivating children’s book is a colorful exploration into the fascinating world of bugs, beautifully illustrated to capture the imagination of readers of all ages.

One of the standout features of this book is its vibrant illustrations, which are not only visually appealing but also serve as an excellent educational tool for young readers. The colorful imagery truly brings the world of insects to life, making it accessible and engaging for children of various ages.

What I appreciated most about Respect the Insect is its ability to instill a sense of respect and admiration for these often misunderstood creatures. Through its pages, children not only learn about the different types of insects but also gain insight into their crucial role in our ecosystem. This book effectively emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting these tiny yet essential beings.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

I. Love. Bugs. I can remember being a little girl and waking up at 5am every day, giddy to go outside and look under rocks for bugs and worms. I have always been disappointed, however, to learn that the love of creepy crawlies is not universal. I can't tell you how excited I am that there's a book I can give all the little kids in my life to hopefully encourage them to respect and even perhaps admire beetles, ants, and moths.

Every page is illustrated with bright, cheerful, friendly depictions of all sorts of different species of insects. There's lots of information in the book too! Most of it would be too hard for a kid under about 7 or 8, but I think if you've got kids in that 7-10 age range, this would be a perfect gift. To be totally honest with you, I'm an adult woman, and I'm going to buy a copy of this for myself because I loved it so, so much.

This book made me happy, and when it comes out in July, it's going right on my coffee table!

Cute. Quirky. Informative.

Loved this book, the illustrations are amazing, funny, quirky, adorable!

This really keeps the kiddos (and adults) interested throughout with the fun names like “garbage guzzlers” -black soldier fly and “fantastic farmers” -Ant. It’s also written as the insects POV so that really kept the kiddos throughly interested!

All I could think about was “how cool would this be as a kids cartoon show?” The colorful pages and bite sized info were so entertaining, I’m 23 years old but let me tell you something, I never knew half of the amazing things those insects offer us. I would definitely still kill cockroaches.

Colourful children’s book about insects. Like many invertebrates, insects aren’t necessarily our favourite animals. Yuck, go away or ahh, comes to mind. Or a quick squash with a foot. But for some they are fascinating, there are so many unique often interesting species, and ultimately our world wouldn’t function without them. Here is a book that children can read, where the insects, presented as colourful drawings, are not so scary, but insects lives and roles are presented for youngsters to think about and learn. Maybe insects really get an undeserved bad name. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

The book is divided into five distinct sections: Cleaner-Uppers, Menu Makers, Ecosystem Enigmas, Teeny-Tiny Teachers, and Inspiring Icons. Each section discusses various insects in detail.

Brimming with vibrant illustrations, this book serves as a treasure trove for insect enthusiasts. It delves into the world of unique and uncommon insects, showcasing species not typically found in ordinary books. Remarkably, the facts presented in the book are closely connected to our everyday surroundings. As a result, with a keen eye, we may encounter some of these fascinating insects from the book in our environment. Without insects like the ones in this book, we wouldn't exist. Calling all budding entomologists! 🦗🐝 🪰

Not everyone loves bugs, but this book will explain to you why you should at least appreciate them! Some of those creepy crawlies provide essential services to our planet, help keep our environments clean, and even ensure that some of our favorite treats exist!

Here are some examples from the book:

▶️ Some insects eat dead tissue and are even used in museums to clean up specimens.

▶️ Did you know that some bugs pollinate cacao plants? Yes, those little insects play a crucial role in ensuring we have chocolate!

▶️ Surprisingly, some bugs can digest plastic! Imagine how that could help our environment by breaking down plastic waste.

▶️ Bumblebees are unsung heroes when it comes to pollination. They buzz around, ensuring a wide range of crops and wild plants thrive.

▶️ Some bugs even eat other bugs, like mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases to humans. It’s like having tiny pest controllers on patrol!

The book features fantastic illustrations with delightful and informative blurbs about what insects do for us and our environment. It also dives into the lifecycle of insects and provides tips on how we can support our insect friends.

Whether you’re a curious young reader or a science enthusiast, this book is chock-full of information that will inspire awe and appreciation for the tiny creatures that share our world.

Thank you @NetGalley and @quartokids @wideeyededitions for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
