Description

In New York Times bestselling author Julie Kagawa’s groundbreaking modern fantasy series, dragons walk among us in human form…

THE DRAGONS OF TALON: Once hunted nearly to extinction, they are now poised to take over the world.

THE ORDER OF ST. GEORGE: The legendary dragonslayers will stop at nothing to wipe dragons from the face of the earth.

These mortal enemies are locked in secret and deadly combat, with humanity none the wiser.

To take her rightful place in the Talon organisation, young dragon Ember Hill must prove she can hide her true nature and blend in with humans. Her delight at the prospect of a summer of “normal” teen experiences is short-lived, however, once she discovers that she’s also expected to train for her destined career in Talon. But a chance meeting with a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught.

As Ember struggles to accept her future, St. George soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian is tasked with hunting her down. But when faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything the Order has ingrained in him – and what he might be willing to give up to uncover the truth about dragons.

Kagawa knows how to end a first volume for maximum cliff-hanger drama. Booklist

Talon is an organisation of dragons living amongst humans and constantly hunted by the Order of St George, a special and highly trained army solely for this purpose.

Ember and Dante are dragon twins which is unheard of in the dragon world. Now that they are sixteen, they are sent to learn how to blend in and assimilate human behaviour. They have human guardians who report to Talon about their progress. The twins are expecting to have a real summer break, surfing, soaking up the sun and do all the things that teenagers do during their summer holidays but it would appear that Talon has its own plan.

Garret is a highly trained and experienced member of the Order of St George who is sent to identify the female dragon and eliminate her. Although it's not easy to identify a dragon in human form, Intel points in Ember's direction. It's interesting to see Garret's reaction to Ember and vice versa on the first time they meet. After all they are both preys in different ways. They both start questioning what they have been led to believe but taking action in any form is near impossible.

Ember is not happy about her life being dictated by Talon but Dante adheres by the rules even though he loves his sister dearly and very often gets her out of trouble.

Then there is the mysterious Riley who appears to know more about Talon's ways, reason why he is now a rogue dragon. I like the way the story unfolds and how nothing is obvious or predictable but very consistent even when it keeps you guessing. I like the way this instalment ends and now I want to know how Dante goes about the task he has been allocated not to forget the fate of Ember, Garret and Riley!

The next book in the series is released at the end of this month and needless to say that I await in anticipation.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
