Description

Will Fortescue is a Royalist, fighting at the heart of the English Civil War.

He is also a young man, barely out of his teens, and painfully naïve.

When he rescues a young woman from his enemy’s camp, she rewards him with a token of jewellery.

But now the girl is missing and her father wants justice.

The token looks like thievery, and Will looks like a criminal.

Sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit he is rescued by the mysterious Master Cosmas who makes him Prince Rupert’s messenger.

But treachery is at work, and black magic too, and before Will realises what is happening his attempts to serve his Prince and repay Master Cosmas have landed him at the heart of a treasonous plot.

Unknowing of the plot, the Prince grows fond of Will.

But when the Prince is finally confronted with the plot, Will must persuade Rupert into treachery or save him from the men who would make him a King.

“Narrated with admirable realism.” — The Times.

“A work of quite unusual literary finish and beauty … It deserves to take a place in literature.” — Scotsman.
