Description

After the death of her beloved grandmother a young woman discovers a box of letters from World War II that will both destroy the life she knew and bring her a better understanding of her true identity.

The letters that would forever alter my identity were in a decorative candy tin, tucked under the bed on her side, hidden but within easy reach. I had walked into the room to do the task no one else could handle. It was a room full of dusty smells combined with a powdery rose scent from my grandmother's favorite talc. The closet door was open, her daughter, my aunt had been in and chosen the burial outfit. After that she vowed never to return to the house. I wanted to believe that the last few years of Gramma's dementia had taken their toll on my aunt and she was simply exhausted from the burden of care. In my heart, I knew it was something more because the day to day care was not on her. After my parent's death the dementia seemed to be exacerbated and I moved in with grandma the week after my grandfather's funeral because my aunt threatened to put her in a home. I couldn't stand the idea of her losing her son, her husband and then her home too.  How was I to know the woman I had loved so much was keeping a deep secret? Did she leave the letters so I would discover the truth, were they too precious to destroy or were they simply forgotten? With her gone, would I ever understand?

After the death of her beloved grandmother a young woman discovers a box of letters from World War II that will both destroy the life she knew and bring her a better understanding of her true...

I loved that this was for the most part a collection of letters between two people during WWII. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this type of book.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion of it.

WOW! Just... WOW! Bryant delivered an amazing look into the real lives of America's Greatest Generation. It was funny and sad and so very touching. Her handling of the letters was compassionate and obviously a work of love.

This work of fiction so well interlaced with real letters from WWII soldiers it quickly makes one forget it is a fictional story. The characters and the people in the letters come to life. The opening makes one feel connected, as if there, walking the rooms one by one for what may be the last time. Seeing the history, the love, the family that had truly lived there. As the letters unfold, they wrap themselves around the readers heart. Beautiful story, beautifully told.

Thank you Ms. Bryant.

Letters From the War by Amanda Bryant is a beautifully written novel of a young girl whose life is changed when she finds a box full of letters that her grandmother has hidden. The letters reveal a secret family history...but was it better left hidden?

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this enjoyable novel.

I received a free electronic copy of this historical novel from Netgalley, Amanda Bryant, and BooksGoSocial. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read Letters From the War of my own volition and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work.

Amanda Bryant brings us an intimate look into the hearts and minds of those tasked with fighting a war and missing those loved ones at home. This is done for the most part through letters from sailor Frank Jones patrolling in the Atlantic and his lady love, Miss LaDonna Singleton of Boise, Idaho. We see through his eyes the cost of war, and the exhaustion and boredom on those tours where nothing happens, the pain and angst when something does happen, and the joy that connections from the homeland bring. I very much enjoyed this work. Though short, it was representative of the sacrifices made by the folk of all sorts when politics break down and mediation becomes open warfare.
