Description

In this book from the critically acclaimed, multimillion-copy best-selling Little People, BIG DREAMS series, discover the life of Martin Luther King Jr., the inspiring minister and civil rights activist.

Little Martin grew up in a family of preachers: his dad was a preacher, his uncle was a preacher, his grandfather was a preacher…so maybe he’d become a great preacher too. One day, a friend invited him to play at his house. Martin was shocked when his mother wouldn’t let him in because he was black. That day he realized there was something terribly unfair going on. Martin believed that no one should remain silent and accept something if it's wrong. And he promised himself that—when he grew up—he’d fight injustice with the most powerful weapon of all: words. This moving book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the inspiring activist’s life.

Little People, BIG DREAMS is a best-selling biography series for kids that explores the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

This empowering series of books offers inspiring messages to children of all ages, in a range of formats. The board books are told in simple sentences, perfect for reading aloud to babies and toddlers. The hardcover and paperback versions present expanded stories for beginning readers. With rewritten text for older children, the treasuries each bring together a multitude of dreamers in a single volume. You can also collect a selection of the books by theme in boxed gift sets. Activity books and a journal provide even more ways to make the lives of these role models accessible to children.

Another powerful book in the Little People, Big Dreams series!
The story of Martin Luther King Jr. is told in simple words for the youngest readers. There are several strong messages in the book. Love is the solution against hate, never accept something wrong, and use peaceful ways to fight against it. And, above all, it's the character that matters, not the colour of our skin.
We will have this book on our children's shelves. It will give us so many topics for discussion!
Thank you to Net Galley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing me with an e-book copy in exchange for my honest review!

Another good addition to this great series. I enjoy getting to look at greats like MLK, Jr from the vantage point of their childhood and how that influenced the rest of their life.

Martin Luther King, Jr. by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is a book from the Little People, another fantastic book to join the other books by Big Dreams books. I just love these sweet little books. They're an introduction for young pre-school readers to learn about amazing, wonderful men and women that have our influenced the world today. I am so glad the covered Martin Luther King. This small book was told from his childhood. Sadly at this time, he had experienced much discrimination. Young readers alike, will learn how this impacted him as he moved to change things through peaceful protest.
This made a great impact around the world and Martin Luther King is talked and learned about today in schools. Sadly within this book there is no mention of his sad end of his life.
But, concentrates on his famous speech " I have a Dream"

Big Thank you to netgalley and the Quarto Publishing Group for a free copy for an honest opinion.

This is another brilliant addition to this series – even as an adult I look out for the next book in the series being released!

I love the images in this series and this is a delightful introduction to Martin Luther King Jr, one of the most influential and powerful people that has lived. I do think that possibly how his life ended could have been touched up at the end when it had the photos of his life and achievements, but I do also understand why it was missed off with the target audience and the focus on the book is really his "I have a dream" speech.

This series is an excellent introduction to some of the well-known, and less well-known characters that have had a great impact in our lives through a variety of subjects such as literature, the rights of minorities, political influence, women's rights and science.

It is 4 stars from me for this one – a delightful read and one I will be highly recommending!!

I love this series of books, each one gives enough information to tell kids about a important historical person and why what they did mattered. The focus on MLK in this book is enough to get kids interested in the civil rights leader and the timeline at the end with actual pictures once again brings the illustrations at the beginning to life.

This title is the latest in a series of brief biographies of well known individuals. Each is meant to teach and inspire young children. This entry about Martin Luther King is no exception. In this title with muted, multi racial illustrations, Martin's story is told from childhood. At that time, he experienced discrimination. Young readers learn how this impacted him as he moved to change things through peaceful protest. Because this book is for young children, there is no mention of his assassination but rather focuses on his "I have a dream" speech.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Martin Luther King Jr. by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another charming addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series that is so well deserving of its many accolades. This time around, the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. is introduced and presented in such a way that children will gain a sense of King Jr.'s struggles against segregation, and the peaceful stand he took against social injustices. As always, I applaud this appealing and educational series that is so rich in scope. Recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for this ARC.

I just love these little books. What better way to learn about the positive role models through history than write stories of their lives and adorable pictures.

The injustices that have occurred through history and explored on a very small scale in life of Martin Luther King Jr.

This is great for kids and great for adults.

These books sell wonderfully in our store and I enjoy reading them as much as the kids do.

This one on Martin Luther King Jr, as with the others, gives the perfect amount of detail for a child without being too complicated, dark or graphic. The art style is beautiful and eye catching.

I can’t wait to keep reading more of these in the future!

What an inspiring and easy to follow book for young minds! This book is such an encouraging book for children and can really make them think about things and make a difference in the world.

I can't wait to read more of the books in this series.

I thought this did a good job of presenting the work MLK Jr. did in a succinct and easy to understand way. However, I do feel that not mentioning how he died anywhere in the book is doing a disservice to the fight for racial justice & equality in the US. I understand that bringing up someone getting killed in a children's book is heavy, but that is the truth of what happened, and it wasn't even mentioned in the little biography in the back of the book.

This is an okay entry in the popular Little People, Big Dreams series. It's a fine book but very superficial, with MLK's words mixed in with the text without attribution. It also mentions Rosa Parks and the bus boycott, but makes the common mistake of making it sound as if Ms. Parks just randomly decided one day not to give up her seat instead of recognizing that it was part of a planned event that she volunteered to do to bring about change. I'm also not sure why the illustration of people standing up against injustice with Dr. King shows all men linked arm and arm with him, with women only in the background (kids may also wonder why everybody in the crowd is holding signs that only say I AM A MAN). The book also doesn't tell what happened to Dr. King, just leaving kids to ask the next logical question and for parents to have to answer. While it's certainly sad that he was assassinated, that is part of his story and pretending it didn't happen doesn't do much to teach kids the real life of this important figure in civil rights history.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

While scanning through the books on NetGalley, I stumbled across this awesome new board book series for babies and toddlers. The vibrant, yet simple, covers displaying historical women that I have grown up learning caught my eye, and it instantly drew me to dig in and see what this series is all about.

Through my reading and my post-reading research, I have learned that Little People, Big Dreams is a new series that focuses on introducing the youngest of readers to amazing, wonderful women that have influenced the world.

Each book is purposely designed in order to highlight one woman who has made a difference in the world. It tells the story of that women's dream and how she was able to make her dream come true despite the biggest obstacles.

I loved the simplicity of the design of the series, Little People, Big Dreams. The authors and illustrators who have worked on this project clearly understand their audience, and they have made each of the books reflect exactly what they want their youngest of readers to be exposed to.

Designed for babies and toddlers, Little People, Big Dreams uses simple text and engaging pictures to tell the story of each woman in a kid-friendly manner.

Often times, my biggest complaint with board books is that they lack plots or messages. Even though board books are purposely designed for babies and toddlers, I absolutely believe they still need to be strong examples of books that contain both strong plots and messages. All age levels of children need to have access to great texts.

I loved how Little People, Big Dreams designed their biography series for baby and preschool readers. There are not many nonfiction book series out there. This series is absolutely helping to pave the way to push the norm for what we typically think of when we think of baby books.

Little People, Big Dreams series is a positive example of how even our youngest of readers can read and learn from awesome books!

The story of Martin Luther King Jr. was absolutely-deserved to become one of the newest biographies add to the Little People, Big Dreams Collection. MLK Jr.'s contribution to our world as one of the great social activist of all time is surely deserving of his own book within the Little People, Big Dreams series.

This book is sure to be loved by both you and your littlest reader as you learn all about his fight to bring social equality to all of the world.

These books are always a delight to read. Such a wonderful yet concise way to introduce young souls to one of the greatest human beings of our time. The illustrations are eye-catching and the shadow details really make them pop out. I would love to gift this to a niece or nephew to inspire the young optimist in them.

A great new addition to a series of biographies aimed at the very young reader. This brings the life of Martin Luther King to a new audience and will help with their understanding when learning about Black History Month. This is definitely one that every school should have and that every book list should include.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book. Even though I knew it was meant for children I absolutely loved it. This is such an important issue that all kids need to learn about when they are in school. This book should be a staple in classrooms. I really liked the "layman" language and ease of the story that made it easy to understand the importance of the issues addressed and easy for children to understand.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This book in particular talks about Martin Luther King Jr. and his peaceful fight against racism and segregation in the USA. His fight for equality is truly something to be admired. This is such an inspiring little book and a lot of children could truly learn from it.

My 5 year old loves the books from the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series. I thought some of the topics touched on in the particular issue were a bit grown up for him but a fabulous book none the less. Really enjoy all the books from this series, teaching and inspiring children while they read. 5 stars!

I have seen this series of books and often wondered how age appropriate they were for school age kids. After reading Martin Luther King Jr.'s version of the series, I have ordered multiple versions for Christmas presents. They are fabulous. So age appropriate with such a strong message. We can all learn so much from people in history who had the strength and determination to push the boundaries. Well done!

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about Martin Luther King and his peaceful fight against racism and segregation. He's definitely an important figure who has inspired many many people. Children will learn from his story, for sure.

This book about Martin Luther King, Jr. was neat. I loved the illustrations and it was informative. It also talks about racism and civil rights (as it should, considering it is about MLK) and it could easily teach young kids a little bit about those topics.

Powerful and motivating childrens book

This is another book of the "Little People Big Dreams" series. I love this series for inspiring kids to dream big and do what they love. This book is a short biography of MLK Jr, telling his life in a way understandable for children. It is beautifully illustrated. This book is a useful tool to teach children about equality and love. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and was motivated by it to read more on MLK Jr.!

This entry into the charming Little People, BIG DREAMS series takes a look the life of Martin Luther King Jr. At a young age, King quickly learned there were differences in the world. He was not allowed in his friend's home because of the colour of his skin. They had different buses, and went to different schools. Martin took note, and polished his speaking skills. He became a Reverend, and spoke often to his congregation about equality, and making a stand for what's right. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in a bus to a white passenger and was arrested for it, King rallied the citizens, successfully carrying out a strike against bus riding until the laws were changed. This was a spark to the major civil rights movement leading to King's famous 'I have a dream' speech. Above all, King supported non-violent protests, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, to get the message across. The end of the book contains a more detailed look at King's life, using language suited for much older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great! I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended!

I absolutely adore this series and this book was no different. As most of the books but this one especially so they all share an important message/messages, each one individual to the specific person but written in a way that is easy for children to understand and learn from. This one in particular is so important for our youth to read especially with the way the world is at the moment. Our kids need to see, learn and remember that we have these role models who stood for something and that we all can too. I will 100 percent be buying a copy of this book for my daughter.

Martin Luther King is an essential figure and his activism needs to be remembered.

This little book introduces his life to children, explaining why it is important to stand up against discrimination, hate and racism.
I am glad that The Little People, Big Dreams included the figure of the minister in the collection as Martin's legacy and the 'I have a dream' speech are so important for future generations.

Thanks to the publisher and to the authors for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.

'Martin Luther King, Jr.' by Ma Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Mai Ly Degnan is the 33rd entry in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series of books for little readers.

Little Martin was surrounded by a family of preachers, so perhaps it was inevitable he would become one as well. An early childhood incident made him aware of racism when a childhood friend invited him to play, and the child's mother wouldn't let Martin in the house. Martin went on to great things.

This is such a great series that I instantly request review copies every time I see them. The range of artists in the series makes them interesting.

I love the Little People, Big Dreams series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. I was happy to see this addition to the series, highlighting Martin Luther King Jr. This book shares his story from his childhood, ending with his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech. Young readers will learn how this peaceful and loving man impacted the world to change things through peaceful protest. His messages of love being the solution against hate, never accepting something that is wrong, and use peaceful ways to fight against wrong. His most important message is that it is the character of a person that matters, not the colour of their skin. I know this is a book for children, but it is too bad the decision was made not to include what happened to him. I think that is a very important part of his story. Once again, the illustrations are well done and will appeal to young children. I definitely recommend this book to all school and public libraries.

This is a great book to teach children about Martin Luther King Jr.

At the beginning of the story, young Martin plays with his friends and doesn’t notice that they look different from him. It isn’t until his friend’s mother won’t allow him into their house that he realizes they are different. This shows how children aren’t naturally racist, but have it taught to them. Martin goes on to fight against prejudice by teaching others.

I always remember learning about Martin Luther King Jr. in school, so I really liked this book. This is a great children’s book.

I don’t have much to say in this review that I didn’t say in my review on “David Attenborough,” which is a similar book within the same series. These books would make excellent introductions or supplements to lessons on the person they are about. I did fail to mention in my previous review just how adorable the art style is! I will say, however, formatting wise, it would make more sense to me if this book series were printed as more of a story book, rather than as a board book, BUT these books have been coming out in this format for years now and are clearly successful, so who am I to say? 🤷🏼‍♀️
