There she attracts the attention of the heir to the throne and... but you'll be getting no spoilers from me on that score. The novel is full of twists and turns and has a distinctly Georgian flavour, namedropping heroes of the Regency era (including Lord Byron, who else!) with gay abandon. There is excitement, danger, and, of course (we are in the Austen universe after all), Mr Darcy."

This is the first book by this author that I have read. I don’t usually read books concerning Mr. Darcy and the Bennetts, but I really enjoyed this one. It was not what I expected but found the travel and experiences that Lydia had, made the book a real page-turner. I loved the fact that there was no described sex. I am not one for a lot of description but it was needed in the book and helped set the places and adventures. The characters were well-written and the storyline flowed well. I was a little disappointed in the ending but am hoping for more of her adventures. Well worth the read. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.

Lydia Bennet takes center stage in Jean Burnett's "Scandal in the Sun." This engaging novel invites readers into Lydia's colorful world, where her relentless pursuit of adventure, romance, and fun continues.

The story picks up with Lydia as a widow, no longer restrained by her family's disapproval or societal expectations. Freed from the shadows of her elder sister Elizabeth's life, she is determined to see the world, secure a wealthy husband, and savor every moment of life's pleasures. Burnett's tale unfolds as Lydia embarks on a journey filled with escapades, intrigues, and newfound love.

"Scandal in the Sun" is a Regency novel featuring a bold primary character. Lydia is brilliantly developed, capturing her essence as a fearless and flirtatious young woman who knows how to make the most of her circumstances. She's a character readers can't help but love, even when her actions raise eyebrows. Her exuberance and zest for life are contagious.

Lydia's adventures take her on a whirlwind tour of Regency England. Readers are treated to encounters with historical figures such as the Prince Regent and the renowned poet, Lord Byron. These interactions illustrate the vibrant and glamorous society of the time.

At the heart of Lydia's escapades is her loyal and equally mischievous maid, Adelaide. The dynamic between these two women is a prominent feature of the book. Their camaraderie and shared adventures infuse the story with humor and warmth. Adelaide's character adds depth to Lydia's journey and serves as an important counterpart to her.

The story's backdrop is vividly painted, transporting readers to various locations across the globe. From Brazil to the West Indies and India, Burnett's descriptive phrasing captures the essence of each place, setting the stage for Lydia's escapades. She conveys the atmosphere and culture of these various places.

Romance is included, with Lydia's journey marked by encounters with men who pique her interest. The romantic entanglements keep readers engaged. While some relationships lead to passionate liaisons, others are mired in secrets and intrigue.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Lydia's journey is her quest to meet the violinist Niccolò Paganini. Paganini's legendary reputation for both his musical skills and his notorious affairs captures Lydia's imagination. This pursuit leads her to Paris, where Paganini resides. Burnett's depiction of Lydia's interactions with Paganini introduces a fascinating twist to the story, blending historical and fictional elements.

"Scandal in the Sun" balances humor, intrigue, and romance. It's a continuation of Lydia Bennet's adventures, offering readers a fresh perspective on this character. Burnett's witty and engaging storytelling captures the essence of the era. Lydia's unapologetic pursuit of pleasure and excitement make her an irresistible heroine.

Jean Burnett's writing jumps right off of the page, and her storytelling, characters, and world-building are visceral and detailed.

This book explores what might have happened to Lydia Bennet after "Pride and Prejudice". Throughout this book, she and her maid Adelaide travel around the world. Various historical figures feature, and the author seamlessly weaves history and fiction together as part of this story.

This is a first time read for me by this author and it won't be my last. I always love picking up a Pride and Prejudice retelling or reimagining, and this one did not disappoint. The story follows Lydia as she is now a widow and is ready to leave her home and see the world. She never was one to sit back and watch the world go by, and she is determined to have as much fun as possible and hopefully find a rich husband in the process. As she travels and has many great adventures, she also has some mishaps and misfortunes along the way. Exactly what you would expect from Lydia Bennet!
This was a fun and enjoyable take on the life of a bold and determined character from my favorite novel. The author did a wonderful job of capturing the characteristics and essence of Lydia, who always seems to make the best of whatever situation she finds herself in. The story offers a fresh perspective on Lydia's life after Pride and Prejudice ends. It was well-written and the storyline flowed smoothly, resulting in a very enjoyable read. I would love to read more of this author's work in the future!
