If The Scarlet Pimpernel was reborn as a novel of the American revolution, it would be this book.
Spies, intrigue, nocturnal adventuring, and romance, set against the backdrop of pivotal Revolutionary War sites, such as the infamous battle of Bunker Hill.
J.M. Hochstetler is clearly an avid historian, and it shows in her meticulous attention to detail. If the book had one major weakness for me, it was actually the detail, specifically the lengthy descriptions of battles. I confess I skimmed those. The vivid descriptions of 1770s Boston and surrounding towns was really interesting, however, and had me doing extra research on the side.
Great characters, including and especially the two main characters, Elizabeth and Jonathan. I’ve always been a sucker for stories of women disguising themselves to venture into ‘man territory’ undiscovered, and the historical basis for these women grabs me as much as the fictional.
It was quite a bit more faith-heavy than other Christian fiction I’ve read, so if that’s not your thing, heads up.

In this fascinating, high-stakes historical fiction novel, the American Revolution is heating up in 1775 Boston. As British soldiers -- namely the dashing rogue Jonathan Carleton, a British officer -- moves in with her family, Elizabeth Howard’s rebellious activities (and those of her family and close friends) become much harder to carry out especially because Elizabeth is the daring rebel courier Oriole. As tensions rise and come to a head, Elizabeth, along with her family and Officer Carleton, have to make some difficult decisions about love, loyalty, and picking a side in the war. Hochstetler’s characters, especially Elizabeth and Carleton, are wonderfully written with dynamic, complex backstories, motivations, and secrets, while the many relationships and loyalties of these characters add to their personalities and activities in the pages of this enjoyable historical fiction novel. The setting of 1775 Boston, too, is particularly enjoyable as it focuses on the leadup to the more popular chronological setting of 1776 and the more publicized elements of the American Revolution; focusing on the buildup allows Hochstetler to create some fascinating characters and conflicts set in and around Boston and the Revolution. Daughter of Liberty is a fascinating, fun, high-stakes historical fiction novel fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.

A perfect historical fiction book enriched with details about the historical setting bound to capture the attention and appreciation of anyone who loves history as much as the author clearly does!
Despite the detail the story never got boring - the writing style is simple yet woven beautifully,the characters fleshed out really well with complex personalities and problems and the plot while not fast moving is bound to keep one at the edge of their sit. The romance was also a delight to read! I adored this so much!!!
