King of Gwynedd, Gruffydd ap Cynan, grapples with demons following the Norman attack on the Welsh; Henry I of England summons him to account for his support of the young firebrand Griffith ap Rhys.

Leaving his wife Angharad as regent, Gruffydd knows he must go but may not return from the English Court.

As Gruffydd tries to distinguish friend from foe on the most dangerous journey of his life, Angharad’s brother, Gronwy, moves to take over Gwynedd in Gruffydd’s absence. Gwenllian, who dreams of being a warrior princess, and her brothers take matters into their own hands, risking their lives and putting their family in further jeopardy.
