Description

The Lords of Light and Darkness are feuding over who will rule the universe, and the world of Antorris is caught in their game. Fifty years ago, Darkness fell upon Antorris, unleashing monsters unlike any the world had seen. When the Light came, it offered no assuage, burning and consuming everyone. That was when the world became Corrupted.

Inos Sevrence is a Corruption Hunter who aims to eradicate the Light and Dark-afflicted beasts from her world. But she has a dark secret to her success: she too is Corrupted, empowered by the Darkness she fights against. Though the Darkness within her seems benign, many within Antorris treat her as a monster.

When she happens upon an amnesiac boy possessing unusual magic powers, the two outcasts unite to fight against Corruption. While the threat of war between nations lingers on the ground, something more sinister is brewing in the cosmos.

The fate of Antorris lies with a Corrupted Hunter, a dead man, a god, and a boy with the power to change the world.

Will Inos be able to save the world and unite it against the Lords of the Sturm?

The Lords of Light and Darkness are feuding over who will rule the universe, and the world of Antorris is caught in their game. Fifty years ago, Darkness fell upon Antorris, unleashing monsters...

""The Sturm Awakens is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres, and is the opening novel in The Last Battlefield for Light and Darkness saga. The work is suitable for the general adult reading audience and contains moderate scenes of fantasy violence. Penned by author Marvin North, readers are invited to discover a world plunged into chaos as Darkness and Light vie for dominance, leaving Antorris corrupted and overrun by monstrous beings. Inos Sevrence, a Corruption Hunter, battles these afflictions, empowered by the very darkness she fights against. When she encounters an amnesiac boy with unique magic abilities, they join forces against the Corruption.

Author Marvin North has crafted a superb novel packed with intrigue and pacy twists from start to finish, and I can’t think of a better way to launch readers into a new series than with such a rush of inventive and immersive fantasy. Through this detailed and intricate world-building and a cast of compelling, energetic characters, North immerses us in a thrilling tale where we can feel every visceral moment of struggle and heartache, which only endears us more and more to the heroes and their against-the-odds fight for success. I loved the dialogue, which served to perfectly characterize the attitudes of this new world, and also moved the plot and emotional dynamics forward realistically. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Sturm Awakens to fans of fantasy, adventure, and cosmic conflict who want a gripping narrative that keeps them on the edge of their seats from cover to cover.""

A good read overall, recommended for fantasy fanatics. Inos is a strong and interesting protagonist. The worldbuilding is great and mostly understandable for readers. As I am not a big fantasy reader, I found myself struggling to get through this. The takeaway being: not recommended as a gateway book for folks that aren't into fantasy, but should be a good time for fantasy fanatics.

ARC Review

I really enjoyed the world and character building of this story and am looking forward to the rest of the journey.

Inos is a corruption hunter, tasked with eradicating inflicted beasts before they and their corruption destroy her world.

The high fantasy story was intriguing and gets you rooting for the survival of Antorris.

I absolutely loved Inos’ father, who gave me Beauty and the Beast Maurice vibes. I also enjoyed the range of landscapes and creatures throughout the story and the unexpected artwork in the book.

I read this as part of my first ever buddy read, which was great fun!

Favourite Quotes:
<potential spoilers>

I'm doin' my best, but there's always somethin', huh?" Inos gave a weak smile. There's always something, indeed.

"You don't need to be wanted to be remembered."

"Got it. So, the sky's not safe, the sea's not safe, and the Dalikian Army could invade us any day now. What are we to do?" Inos sighed. "Hope and wish and pray?" Rufin said with a sarcastic chuckle.

The Deciding had begun, and all the universe would become their battlefield.

"I'll never give up, Kosi. We could be at world's end, facing the fiercest of foes, and I would still die to protect this place.

"Commander Baldwin, I am a Corruption Hunter. I do not care for race or politics—my only enemy is Corruption. This Lord, Hecatomb Valz, may require us all to forfeit our lives to defeat him. I will do so gladly, even if those who I fight alongside consider me an enemy—I will still fight to rid our world of Corruption." Inos picked her twin axes out of the sand and faced the coming foes.

I believe that kindness should be cherished, and wickedness eradicated—because we fight for all the world, all the kindness in the world, against all the wickedness."

A high fantasy story with great world building, epic themes and characters you want to root for. I found it was a bit bogged down in places but it was no big deal
