Description

The Call of Adventure. The Voice of Gullivar Jones.

A US Naval officer goes to Mars on a magic carpet in Edwin Lester Arnold’s pioneering pulp novel, Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation. Part hapless tourist, part intrepid explorer, Lieutenant Jones risks all to protect the Martian princess Heru, his guileless enthusiasm, duty to country, and gentlemanly heroics shining every step, lurch, and leap of the way.

In this new adventure set thirty years after the 1905 original, now-retired Captain Jones joins British agents Abigail Bradshaw and Archibald Smart to find the Fountain of Youth before Hitler or Stalin can use its fabled waters to create armies of immortal soldiers.

The only link to the Fountain’s location is a 1914 expedition shrouded in such secrecy, Jones and company must travel the globe seeking obscure clues.

The expedition’s leader, Tsar Nicholas II, hoped the water would cure his hemophiliac son Alexei, while assuring the malevolent mystic Rasputin never learned of its powerful secrets.

Throughout this unforgettable journey, you’ll encounter ancient civilizations, notorious Nazi doctors, famous world leaders like the Japanese Emperor Meiji, US President Teddy Roosevelt, and of course, the last Tsar and his ill-fated family.

Our story begins in the present day, after an online DNA test reveals a long-lost member of the Jones family.

Rating: 4.6/5

Review: I am not sure why this author does not have more exposure. For pure escapism this series fits the bill. Kind of a mix between Raiders of the Lost Ark, Baron Muchausen and Pirates of the Caribbean.

A real creative dive into adventure with well built, although fleeting, characters.

This was a quick and easy adventure read with nice short chapters. It also felt like a pretty light read, even when it touched on some heavier topics toward the end. The cover reminded me of Indiana Jones and that vibe was also in the story. Parts also reminded me a bit of myth retellings like Percy Jackson. I was a little unsure how it could end in a satisfying way while I was reading, but I was happy with the ending when I got to it.

This was a rather interesting way to approach writing a book, using a character invented by someone else and then continuing his story decades later! It did skip back and forth between the 1930's and the present day, but telling it as the author did made sense in the end. It was full of adventure, which was enjoyable, and though it was far fetched, it was fun to read. It also made me a trifle sad to think that if something like the Tsar's treasure existed, and actually found, there would be no end to people trying to steal it to use for their own bad ends.
