Description

‘There was a spirit, the crazed rider insisted, or a demon, or a beasty of some description terrorizing the village. Sheep had been slaughtered. Women had been possessed. His buttocks hurt him from riding! It was bad, was the point.’

All Harlem Sunday has ever wanted to be is a hero.

It’s lucky then that he lives on the continent of Land; a fantastical world beset by all manner of mythical creature, malevolent monster, and evil no-good doer. Luckier still that having recently acquired his papers, Harlem is now legally allowed to ply his trade as a certified hero. And luckier again -- the last time, I promise -- that a nearby village has recently succumbed to a so-called ‘haunting’ of unimaginable terror and is in dire need of a good saving.

It all sounds simple enough, until suddenly it isn’t. But as Harlem is about to learn (several times over), that’s hero work for you. Even if he is wearing shorts.

Discworld meets The Princess Bride with a ham-fisted pinch of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy thrown in for good measure. If your humor skews Monty Python, and your sense of fun and adventure leans fantastical, even absurd, this book is for you. And if not, it makes for great kindling.

There’s good guys and bad guys, there’s the talented and the inept, and there’s a number of folks and things who fit all the places in between. Think the real world, but before it got boring. The one where we had dragons and bog witches, and we didn’t always know what lay on the other side of the valley.'

I was able to read this as a free ebook on Netgalley and absolutely loved it.

Harlem was just so stupidly loveable with the way he was woefully unprepared in the ways of heroing, it was comical.

He meets his own personal hero, Lannis, who swooped in to save the day when Harlem was 8 years old and sparked his desire to become a hero too.

I just loved everything about this book but my favorite part of all was Harlem's interactions with Baba Agnus.

In response to the lady who refused to read the book because the author also writes erotica, you really missed out on a great read and I think it's unfortunate that you judged the author, rather than the book itself. Plenty of authors write books for different genres, it doesn't mean every book will have the same theme. I hope you give the book a second chance and maybe even updating your review once you have.
