Delve into the dark corners of the human psyche with Derrick Heisey's powerful literary drama, The Smell of Meat. In this complex narrative, Ben Yeats, a third-generation butcher, grapples with betrayal and crumbling familial ties against the backdrop of his ancestral butcher shop.

When Ben discovers his wife's infidelity, he finds solace in an unlikely confidant—a decapitated pig head named Roger, whose dark and crude demeanor helps him confront his troubled past and navigate his turbulent present. As Ben's personal life unravels, his bond with Roger deepens, revealing the depths of his inner turmoil through hauntingly beautiful imagery and potent emotions.

  • Vivid and Emotional - Experience the stark beauty of life and loss through Ben’s introspective journey.
  • Engaging and Complex Characters - From the scorned butcher to the introspective painter, Nicole Wallace, each character is meticulously crafted to pull at the heartstrings.

Located above the shop and removed from the world, Ben's home on the second floor serves as a stage for this gripping tale of loyalty, love, and the legacy of pain passed down through generations. The Smell of Meat is more than a story about a butcher—it's a profound exploration of the scars we carry, our journey through healing, and the bizarre ways we cope with life's relentless pressures.

This was not what I usually read but I devoured it anyway, pun intended. I can just smell the atmosphere of this book and it reeks of meat. This gave me creepy vibes with an undertone of warmth. This is about a man who has to grieve over the loss of his marriage in a very unique and disgusting way in the form of a pigs head. Was super fast paced and can be finished in one sitting.

This book was certainly something else. Definitely not something that I usually read, but the Cover of the book just kinda...hocked me (badum tss) I really enjoyed the macabre story. Talking to a decapitated pig head is an interesting way to cope with tragedy.
